Vroman Family Scholarship Student Application

Mark and Joy A. Vroman Scholarship Award
 
The Mark and Joy A. Vroman Scholarship Award recognizes outstanding undergraduate students in the Division of Biological Sciences (“Division”) who are completing research or an internship within their degree field. First preference shall be given to citizens or lawful permanent residents of the United States who graduated from a high school located in the southeastern United States.
 
The 2026 award cycle is now open. Applications will be accepted for students who will be engaging in undergraduate research or internships in their degree field in Summer 2026.
 
Scholarship Amount: Up to three (3) scholarships in the amount of $1500.00 each.
 
Eligibility Requirements*:
1. Declared major in one of the following degree programs: Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology, Genetics, Marine Sciences, Plant Biology, Microbiology
2. Must have successfully completed BIOL 1107 or BIOL 2107H and BIOL 1107L AND BIOL 1108 or BIOL 2108H and BIOL 1108L with grades of B or higher. AP Credit in these courses is acceptable for these criteria.
3. Minimum 3.0 GPA with at least 30 credits earned at UGA by the time of application deadline
4. Must be currently attending UGA and have at least one semester remaining

*Preference is given to citizens or lawful permanent residents of the United States who graduated from a high school located in the southeastern United States.
 
Application Requirements:
 
1. One-page personal statement that includes: 
  • Full legal name (the name you used to apply to UGA), home address (not UGA campus address), UGA email address, 81X#
  • Name and address of the high school where applicant graduated
  • A succinct description of the applicant’s internship or research experience
  • Explanation of how the internship/experience is related to stated major
  • Explanation of how the internship/experience is related to stated major and will enhance future career goals 

It is strongly recommended that the applicant shares this personal statement with the person who will write the academic recommendation letter (see #2).
 
2. Academic recommendation letter (from an instructor, advisor, research supervisor, etc.) that addresses why the applicant should be awarded the scholarship. It is recommended that the letter writer review the applicant’s personal statement when composing their letter. The link for your recommender to upload their recommendation letter will be sent to them automatically upon your submission of this form.

3. Unofficial transcript 

4. Confirmation documentation of the planned internship or research activity (e.g. acceptance letter to internship, course registration for undergraduate research, acceptance letter, etc.) 

Only complete applications received by the deadline will be considered.
 
Applications are due April 15, 2026 at 5 pm. Recipients will be notified by April 30, 2026.
